Stakeholder consultation

Sydney Leaders' Forum

On June 24, 2010, the Department hosted a forum attended by about 70 people to discuss key themes emerging in the Metropolitan Strategy review.

The event at The Mint in Sydney CBD's Macquarie St brought together leaders from Commonwealth, State and local government, non-government groups, the planning profession and the property industry.

The event included presentations from Minister for Planning Tony Kelly, Minister for Transport John Robertson and Department of Planning Director-General Sam Haddad (powerpoint presentation available here). Members of a discussion panel included Mr Haddad, Infrastructure Co-ordinator with Infrastructure Australia Michael Deegan, Transport NSW Director-General Les Wielinga and Stockland chief executive officer Matthew Quinn.

The forum allowed an intelligent and lively discussion about some of the emerging themes in the development of the Metropolitan Plan by later this year.

It discussed the strong role that urban renewal integrated with public transport would play in the development of our plan. The Department has issued a media release about some of the early themes in submissions to the Metropolitan Strategy discussion paper.

Stakeholder forum, Australian Technology Park

On April 9, 2010, the Department of Planning held a key stakeholder forum at the Australian Technology Park at Redfern to examine issues raised in the Sydney Towards 2036 discussion paper. About 100 people attended.

A series of discussion groups examined:

  • Housing, renewal and social inclusion;
  • Integrated land-use and transport planning;
  • Environment, climate change and resources;
  • Employment and economic development.

Department of Planning Director-General Sam Haddad spoke about the challenges and opportunities facing Sydney. A copy of his powerpoint presentation is available here.
